5 Mistakes I made when launching Innovators Can Laugh

Get ready for a candid and enlightening solo episode as I share the 5 crucial mistakes I made while growing my beloved Innovators Can Laugh podcast! 🎧✨

💥 Mistake 1: Neglecting the Power of Keywords! I failed to insert relevant keywords into the RSS feed's name, description, and keywords fields, missing out on valuable organic reach and discoverability. I should have optimized my podcast metadata for maximum visibility!

💥 Mistake 2: Overlooking "Top [[Niche]] Podcasts" Articles! I didn't prioritize efforts to get listed in influential articles featuring top podcasts in the startup niche. By not leveraging these curated lists, I’ve missed out on boosting my podcast's credibility and exposure!

When Innocent Clicks Invite Sinister Visitors

Imagine this scenario: in the bustling hive of an exciting start-up, an employee receives a seemingly innocent email from a familiar client. This email prompts an urgent action - to open an attached document and verify some details. Quick as a flash, the diligent employee, wanting to impress, clicks to open the file.

Except, it isn't just a document. It's a ticket to chaos. The file masks a vicious piece of malware that swiftly infiltrates the network, sinking its claws into sensitive data, and spreading disruption. This is no sci-fi movie; it's a real-life thriller known as a 'phishing attack.'

Phishing is a sly social engineering tactic used by cybercriminals, disguising threats as harmless or even important actions. It exploits our instinct to respond swiftly to requests, turning our diligence into a vulnerability.

Our best defense? A vigilant mind. Doubt before you click, verify before you act. Is the email unsolicited? Are there spelling errors, or does it feel 'off' in some way? Always remember, a moment's pause to verify could be the shield that keeps your cybersecurity armor intact. Stay alert, friends, and keep your digital domains secure!

If you want to stay secure from cyber crime, let me know and I will introduce you to my friend and security expert Florin Popescu, founder of Cyberwall.

Although he was a teenage pop rockstar in the Netherlands (this song reached the top 40 on the music charts), he decided to skip that route and create a startup to help people sleep better. Ep. 103 with Julian Martijn Jagtenberg from Somnox drops next Thursday.

Nike Marketing Strikes Again

Some companies sell shoes. Nike sells you becoming the person you want to be. 👊

Conversation Opener Tip

If you were at a networking event, you can say “Hey, I don’t think I’ve met you yet, I’m (name)?” when standing or sitting next to someone.

This approach feels more natural and implies you are social and you know a lot of people at the venue 🙂

Like this?

Here are a couple of more:

👉 If you know something about the person and what profession they are in, you can ask “Can I bounce a few thoughts off you?”

Your ask makes you vulnerable in the interaction thus making them receptive to chatting with you

👉 If a person gives you a short answer and doesn’t add any more details, you can follow up with asking something hypothetical.

Example: you: "What do you do?"

them: “I’m an engineer”

you: "Well, if you had 100 million dollars, and you could do anything you want, what would you do instead?"

This makes them open up and share their values. (and you can decide if you want to continue the conversation with them)

The End

I’m in London this week visiting agency partners (enterprise accounts) I work with like this guy, Adam Kitchen from Magnet Monster. Adam is a pro when it comes to email marketing and retention (as I witnessed firsthand when he did an audit for one of the brands we are working with).

I also got an idea for where I want to take my cocktail/networking parties. I think I’m going to raise the bar and call it ‘ICL Collab Club’. The idea is for people in the Startup community to be able to network and build relationships with other startups/tech companies in the community. And at every event, there will be one sponsor who will get to do a 10-15 minute live interview with me so attendees in the audience can learn more their service and what problem it solves.

What do you think about this idea? Any suggestions on who/which companies might be interested in sponsoring some events? Reply back and let me know!

Have a great weekend!
